What a Dubai Weekend!

What a weekend the royal family of Dubai had at the Spa...

Travers Stakes
Darley Stable's Bernardini proved he is the best three year old in training. He has won his last 5 races by a combined 33 lengths, including the Withers, Preakness, Jim Dandy and Travers. This horse wins with any kind of pace scenario, with any kind of trip. Simply put, he is a freak! One can only hope to see this horse at 4, but if he wins his final two starts of the year (Jockey Club Gold Cup, Breeders Cup Classic) what else would there be to prove?

King's Bishop Stakes
One of the top 2 year old's from last year Henny Hughes, has turned into one of the top three year olds of this year, but not the way one would have thought. Henny Hughes has proven he is the top 3 year old sprinter in America, with dazzling efforts in his last two, including a romp in the Kings Bishop. I am sure we will see him in the Breeders Cup Sprint, and hopefully in 2007, as sprinters are usually competing past their three year old season.

Bernard Baruch
Ashkal Way put in a dynamic stretch run to stamp himself a contender for perhaps the Breeder's Cup Mile. I don't know if he can run the demanding 1 1/2 Mile of the Turf, but if he can lookout. Either way, this is shaping up for a dynamic Breeders Cup, with Godolphin fully loaded.

Ballerina
Dubai Escapade redeemed herself with a tremendous victory in the Ballerina, stamping herself a distaff contender and grabbing another graded stakes for the Maktoum's.

Discreet Cat - Barbaro, Bernardini, Bluegrass Cat (ill-fated), Showing Up, Jazil, Henny Hughes....Discreet Cat? This crop of three year olds is clearly one of the deepest ever. The best kept secret might be Discreet Cat. Off of one dazzling effort at two, this colt was purchased by Godolphin, brought to Dubai and won the UAE Derby emphatically at 1 1/4 Miles. On Friday he won in his return to the Spa going 7 panels in 1:21 and change, earning a 112 Beyer. Godolphin seems to feel he is best up to a mile, pointing him to the Jerome and Cigar Mile.
